City trips: Freudenstadt, Baden-Baden & Freiburg
Baden-Baden
Stroll through the historic city centre in Baden-Baden and experience the lively cultural scene. With its museums, the stately Festspielhaus and the impressive casino, it is a popular destination, especially for lovers of art, culture and music. The spa town is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The so-called "summer capital of Europe" is one of the most important spa towns in Europe due to its more than 1000 years old tradition in the use of thermal water (The Great Spa Townsof Europe). Visit the Caracalla Therme, located in the heart of the city, or the nearby Friedrichsbad, named after Grand Duke Frederick I., who visited various city and spa institutions in 1868 in order to implement the knowledge gained during the construction of the Friedrichsbad.
Freudenstadt
True to the city’s motto “Inside the city – outside wild”, both city tourists and nature lovers will get their money’s worth here. In the centre you will find probably the largest marketsquare in Germany, surrounded by all kinds of shops, cafes and restaurants. Stroll here under the arcades or marvel at the Freudenstadt water fountains located in the heart of the city. In a 10-minute walk you can reach pure nature – countless hiking trails lead to the "Großvatertanne", which is 47 m high and the largest pine in the Black Forest. Or you go to the "Kienberg", where Germany’s highest path of roses welcomes its visitors.
Freiburg
Located on the southern edge of the Black Forest, the university city of Freiburg is known for its medieval city center, crisscrossed by many small streams. The old town with the Freiburg Cathedral, the Martinstor and the historical shopping center invites you to stroll and shop. Especially history and culture enthusiasts can see the most beautiful Baroque, Renaissance and Gothic buildings around the lively centre. Take a seat in one of the cafés and watch children launch their Freiburg brook boats, stroll through the weekly market or discover the small shops in the alleys of the old town.
